Come and walk with His Holiness the Gyalwang Drukpa and his spiritual entourage, in Odisha, to discover the the ‘Diamond Triangle’ of the ancient and flourishing Buddhist settlements of Lalitgiri, Ratnagiri and Udaygiri. Buddhism was known in Odisha right from the time of its inception, though Lord Buddha never visited Odisha during his lifetime. Buddhist Chronicles refer to Buddha's hair relic being brought to Odisha by two wealthy traders, Tapassu and Bhallika. In the subsequent period, the nail and tooth relics of Buddha were also brought to Odisha for devotees to pay homage to. In the 7th century, the visit of Buddhist Master Hsuen Tsang to Odisha vividly accounts the flourishing state of Buddhism in this region. The influence and impact of Buddhism continued in Odisha until 15th century. The innumerable stupas, viharas and images found across Odisha testify to its long heritage.
During this one-week Pad Yatra, we will visit the rich heritage sites of Buddhism, blessed by the relics of Buddha, holy saints of the past, together with His Holiness the Gyalwang Drukpa and his spiritual entourage, against the backdrop of historical sites, meditation caves, and archaic frescoes of meditational deities.
Just like the ancient times when the Buddha walked with his disciples and taught them through his physical actions and verbal expressions, His Holiness and his spiritual sons and daughters will help us relive the ancient traditions of spirituality as well as connect this ancient wisdom with our modern life.
A pilgrimage to holy places is also a practice of devotion. By showing veneration at the holy sites, one is able to purify one’s body, speech and mind. With this correct understanding, the pilgrim would be endowed with Right Motivation, Right Speech and Right Action. Visiting the holy pilgrimage sites with correct attitude will help us in the practice of Buddhadharma.
This 7-Day Pad Yatra has been carefully designed so that as many people as possible could join us in this blessed journey.
